‘Lough Currane’
Revealing 1,000 years of Kerry environmental history
by Dr. Elaine Treacy (Trinity College Dublin)

Friday 20th September 2019 8pm

Elaine Treacy will present findings from her PhD research on Lough Currane, Waterville, Co. Kerry. The research focused on the history of water quality in the lake spanning the last 1000 years with an in-depth focus on the last 50 years. Lake sediment cores and the environmental indicators contained therein were used to examine the extent of water quality deterioration in the lake while a combination of historical documentary and climate records were utilised to assess the causes for the deterioration in water quality.
Elaine is a native of Killarney and works as a Chief Technical Officer (Specialist) in the Department of Geography, Trinity College Dublin. In this role she is actively involved in all aspects of physical geography research especially palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental research. She has extensive laboratory and fieldwork experience and has expertise in the fields of diatom analysis, pollen analysis and particle size analysis.

Event organised by Heritage Iveragh/Oidhreacht Uíbh Ráthaigh in association with Tech Amergin Arts Centre.
