Back To Education Initiative (BTEI) *
Advanced Certificate in Supervision in Childcare *
Monday 7.00 – 10.00pm and every other Saturday 9.30am – 4.30pm
This course will be run over 2 years and is suitable for any learners keen to advance in their childcare career.
Course content includes, Child Development, Early Childhood Programmes, Social & Legal Issues in Childcare,
& Supervision in Childcare. Candidates must have completed a FETAC level 5 major award in order to enrol for
this course. Learners will be expected to undertake a substantial amount of research and self-directed
learning outside of the contact hours.

Drawing & Design through 2D (CAD)
This course is suitable for people interested in a career in engineering – civil, mechanical or electrical,
manufacturing, building, construction, and media & entertainment. Main emphasis will be on 2D design with some work in 3D. Drawing skills not essential. The course will be given by Mr. Denis Healy (Mechanical & Engineering lecturer in Cork Institute of Technology). One evening a week, day to be confirmed. 3hrs per class.

Introduction to Irish Theatre & Dramatists 7.00 – 9.00pm
Following the course on ‘An Introduction to Irish Drama in the 1980s’ in the Spring this year, Michael Etherton is offering to organise and guide a further course exploring the plays of Brian Friel, Tom Murphy, Frank McGuinness and also other Irish playwrights, in an active group in the autumn. Michael hopes this time to include comprehensive play-readings by the group, for their own enjoyment, perhaps even of whole shorter plays, with parts and texts assigned to members the preceding week. Update Your Office & Administration Skills for Work – Wednesday & Friday 10.00am – 1.00pm
This course will be run over 2 terms (autumn & spring) and is ideal for someone wishing to work in an office,
for people seeking FETAC accreditation, and for people wishing to hone their skills as an office administrator.
In the first term, starting in October 2011, students will learn how to use a computer effectively in an office
environment using the latest windows operating software and Microsoft Office suite 2010. In the second term
(spring 2012) you will learn how to use software applications specific to tasks carried out in an office. Learners

Computers for People with Dyslexia ‘Read Write Gold’ 4.30 – 6.30pm
This computer software is designed to help people with learning difficulties i.e. Dyslexia and those with visual impairment. Scan your homework and the computer will read it to you. If you are familiar with the ABC spelling & grammar tool in MS Word, ‘Read Write Gold’ will read the word meanings to you. Use the ‘Picture Dictionary’
to improve your understanding and the ‘Sounds Like’ tool to help with confusing words. Record different voices
to read different text i.e. your teacher and your parent. Save your scanned files to a sound file to hear it on your MP3 player or Ipod. 6 weeks. Eithne Garvey

Learn the traditional methods of colouring fabric & yarn using natural dyes from the local environment such
as gorse, fuchsia, onions, cabbage and beetroot. You will create your own designs and patterns to print onto
fabric using different methods such as silk screen, wood block and batik wax resist. Suitable for beginners and

Local & Organic Food 2.00 – 5.00pm
The local organic food module aims to give an understanding of the meaning and importance of local and
organic food production. The course develops the expertise to recognise good food and develops some skills necessary to produce and cook it – from seed to table including wildlife in the garden. Desktop Publishing using Microsoft Office 2010 Publisher 2.00 – 4.00pm
Create greeting cards for friends and business with Publisher’s pre-designed templates. Manipulate images
taken with your digital cameras and use them in your marketing brochures etc. Create calendars, postcards, and newsletters using preset styles or customise to your small business. And so much more.

Back To Education Initiative (BTEI) *Introduction to Video/Media Expression 10.00am – 3.00pm & Sunday
This hands-on, practical course serves as an introduction to using video creatively. It’s your chance to tell your
own stories, learn to use video equipment and express yourself creatively. As a certified Fetac course, it’s a
great way back into education in a supportive, fun environment – and can be used as a stepping stone on to
further education and a career in video production. All equipment is provided and no experience is necessary.
This FETAC accredited course will be run in conjunction with Cork Film Centre. Cork Film Centre is a
resource-based organisation, focused on developing, promoting and facilitating the advancement of creative
film and video making in Cork and beyond. The course facilitator, Ciara Hyland, is an experienced teacher,
she tailors all her workshops to suit the needs of the participants and enjoys communicating in an effective way.

Meditation In Wild Place’s Saturday 29th October, 9.30am – 4.30pm
The mind is the true source of all wild places; mirrored here in South Kerry by the majestic presence of rocky seashores, sea cliffs, endless beaches and the encircling ring of mountains – remote but not isolated.
Meditation can bring together the wildness and beauty of your inner space with the natural peace of these
wild places. This workshop is accessible to all; whether you are new to meditation or highly experienced.
Course will include a visit to local areas suitable for meditation. Lunch will be provided.

Seaweed Vegetable Foreshore Walk & Cooking DemonstrationSaturday 29th October, 11.00am – 4.00pm
Learn how to identify, harvest and prepare many of the common seaweeds found on our shores. A display of
various sea plants with an explanation of where on the shoreline to find them will be followed by a foreshore
walk & talk at Ballinskelligs. On returning to Tech Amergin there will be a tasting of various foodstuffs made
with sea plants, soup, bread, cheese, pickles etc. A demonstration will follow with basic tips on storing, preparing
and cooking with sea vegetables and some basic foodstuffs will be prepared. You will also learn how to use
seaplants to make some simple natural skin and haircare products. Waterproof footwear advised.

Colour Me Confident Saturday 5th & 12th November, 10.00am – 4.00pm
Back this Autumn due to popular demand. Learn how to look your best and feel good about yourself this autumn and have fun in the process! It doesn’t matter what shape, size or age you are- this course is for everyone who wants to look and feel great. Some of the topics that will be covered over two Saturdays: colours that complement you, styles that suit your body shape, practical information about make-up, skin care, hair styles & colours, lingerie and accessories. Equal Skills
EqualSkills is specially developed to cater for those with no experience whatsoever of computers and the Internet.

EqualSkills helps to remove the fear of using a computer for complete novices by using a simple, non-threatening approach to educating individuals in the basic skills of using a computer, email and the Internet.

 

E-Citizen
The e-Citizen certification programme is designed to be as simple and straightforward as possible. Candidates generally work in an instructor-led classroom environment.  The instructor follows the e-Citizen syllabus using the e-Citizen syllabus guide, which requires candidates to practice core tasks that are designed to give practical experience of using the fundamental elements of the internet.

 

ECDL AVAILABLE AS A WALK-IN TEST
The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is the world’s most successful IT skills certification programme. To date, 10 million people have undertaken the ECDL programme in more than 60 countries worldwide. In Ireland, ECDL is administered by ICS Skills (The skills and certification division of the Irish Computer Society).

Outside of Europe the programme is known as the International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL), attesting to its phenomenal world-wide recognition and growth.

 

The ECDL establishes a standard for everyone who uses a computer in either a professional or personal capacity. It is a certificate that verifies competence in computer use, making the holder readily mobile within Ireland and internationally. Employers and job seekers all agree on the importance of this standard definition of practical competence in Information Technology.

In order to achieve the ECDL certification, individuals must pass a test for each of the 7 modules. ECDL Module 1 is a theoretical test of computing knowledge at a general level, while modules 2-7 are predominantly practical skills tests.

The ECDL consists of three main components – a syllabus, a skills card and a question test base, all leading to the European Computer Driving Licence.

 

ECDL Start is also available for students who pass any four modules of the ECDL programme.

ECDL Advanced AVAILABLE AS A WALK-IN TEST
ECDL Advanced Programme has the same international acclaim as the core level ECDL. It lays out a clear progression from the skills of the core level, so that candidates can plan further learning with a definite goal in mind and addresses the needs of the more sophisticated computer user in today’s society.

 

ECDL Advanced is a suite of certifications: Advanced Word ProcessingAdvanced Spreadsheets, Advanced Databases &Advanced Presentations.

ECDL CAD (Computer Aided Design) ‘Drawing & Design through 2D’
ECDL CAD Specialist is the new independent, international standard for core skills in two-dimensional computer
aided design (2D CAD). Aimed at students who are commencing study in fields related to the architectural,
engineering (civil, mechanical & electricial) and construction sectors, ECDL CAD allows them to certify their
2D CAD skills to an independent international standard.

It is also suited to those who may already work in these sectors in a non-technical capacity and who wish
to acquire or certify their 2D CAD skills.

ECDL Web Editing
ECDL WebEditing is a new certification designed to give you the basic skills required to design and create
a simple web site.

ECDL WebEditing has been specifically developed for anyone who wants to acquire the skills to create a
simple web site, without having to commit to the time and expense of a professional-level web design programme.

ECDL WebEditing is an ideal certification for students, small businesses, community groups and individuals who need to create personal web sites. By explaining the basics and cutting through the jargon of web site design, ECDL WebEditing gives you the skills you need to get started.

This programme offers candidates the opportunity to acquire an understanding of key web publishing concepts
and the core skills required to design, create and maintain a static website, without having to commit time
and valuable resources to a professional-level web design programme.

ECDL Image Editing
ECDL ImageEditing has been specifically designed for anyone who wants to acquire the skills to work
with digital images, without having to commit to the time and expense of a professional-level digital
image editing certification.

* Back To Education Initiative (BTEI) –

The overall aim of BTEI is to increase the participation of adults with less than upper second level education in a
range of flexible learning opportunities leading to formal recognition of learners’ achievements through the National Framework of Qualifications. No fees apply for people in receipt of Social Welfare Payments or early school leavers.
Leve 3 & 4 courses are given over 40 hours, & level 5 over 80 hours.

Kerry Education Service Community Education programme aims to provide locally based education programmes that are responsive to the local community’s needs at affordable rates.

Confidential one-to-one tuition available in reading, writing and spelling at a time that suits you in a comfortable setting. Family literacy courses also include Storysacks, Maths for Parents, Dads & Lads courses, The Power of Encouragement, Ceramics Taster, Basic Maths through Arts & Crafs, Creative Writing, English for Internationals, Communications, Writing, Spelling and Reading available through the Adult Basic Education programme. Skillnets Funding Support
Participants in approved courses may qualify for Skillnets support funding for course fees if they are in full time employment – includes sole traders and small businesses – may get up to 50% funding. Jobseekers – unemployed or underemployed may qualify for 100% funding subject to the availability of such places on any course provided they are registered with the Dept. of Social and Family Affairs and are either:
· In receipt of Jobseekers Allowance (JA) or Jobseekers Benefit (JB)
· Former sole traders or small businesses that have formally ceased trading

Fees: Fees must be paid in full before beginning classes. Fees can be paid by cash or cheque (made payable to Kerry Education Service). All course fees are receipted.Cancelled Classes: Refunds of fees are made only where classes are cancelled due to insuffcient enrolment numbers. A refund of your tuition fees will be prepared and forwarded to you at your postal address.
