Photographic & Video Exhibition

Celebrating Two Kerry Sports Heroes

Legendary Kerry cyclist Mick Murphy

& local mountaineer John Dowd
Official opening by ex footballer and radio broadcaster Weeshie Fogarty

Thursday, 2nd July 2009 at 7.00pm

Legendary Kerry cyclist Mick Murphy is being honoured in Tech Amergin, Waterville, by an exhibition of photographic and video work by Cork artist Chris Hurley. In the 1950s and ‘60s the Rás Tailteann attracted bigger crowds than any other sporting event in Ireland. To compete was a great achievement, to finish it a greater one, to win it a monumental one. Occasionally a win became the stuff of legend.

The exhibition takes us back to that time with a film which retells the story by the hero himself, while
intimately portraying him through a series of stunning photographs. The exhibition will run until July 14th.

John Dowd on Mt. Everest

Equally monumental in its scale and achievement was the success of local mountaineer John Dowd,
who in 2008 became the first ever Kerryman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Echoing the teak-tough
nature of Murphys cycling style, John Dowds feat of endurance and both physical and mental courage marks
him out as one of Kerry’s great unsung sporting heroes. Following the exhibition opening John will give an
illustrated talk on his experience, with a slide show of photographs he took himself on his grueling climb.

Ailie Robertson

Monday, 6th July 2009 at 8.30pm

Ailie Robertson image

One of Scotland’s leading young harpists, Ailie Robertson fronts a contemporary, dynamic trio of harp, guitar, and percussion.  A Live-Ireland Winner and BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2008 finalist, Ailie plays with outstanding vigour, poise and sensitivity. Jigs, reels and polkas get the feet tapping while her slow airs have been described as ‘heart-achingly beautiful’.  Ailie Robertson’s eloquent, deeply expressive harp playing, combined with the guitarist’s masterful control of harmony and rhythm, and the percussionist’s canny blend of sensitivity and effervescence create a three-way musical conversation that ranges from soulful reflection to exciting, high octane dance tunes.

“This is an incredible debut solo from Ailie Robertson.….I really struggled to find enough words to put across my praise for this magnificent debut. It's moving, beautiful and totally original. It is a masterful album that combines Irish and Scottish influence as well as an undeniably clever contemporary twist.  Ailie shows that the Celtic harp can be just as at home with guitar, bass, percussion and piano as it can be as a solo instrument. This album will take you to places you have never been before, quite simply it is mind-blowing”.

Theatre

The Kiss

By Michael Harding

Performed by Tom Hickey

Monday, 20th July 2009 at 8.30pm

Tom Hickey in The Kiss

The Kiss is a timely revival of one of Michael Harding’s most incisive comments on the state of Catholism in Ireland. Featuring Tom Hickey it promises to be a riveting experience in the theatre.

The Kiss is a tragic tale of one man’s compulsion, blindness and loneliness.
After the heat of the courtroom, a priest sits in silence to reflect on his deeds and to taste a
bitter remorse. But he is still ambiguous about his past. Forgetful of all suffering but for his own loneliness,
which still blinds him to the consequences, as he turns inward, turns to home – towards mother and
towards the last remembrance of a kiss more treacherous than that of Judas Iscariot. In vivid images and
heartbreaking clarity, this old priest tells the truth as he sees it, and his ambiguous mind is revealed for what it is.

‘’A powerful, important play…should not be missed’’ Irish Independent
‘’a performance of raw power and extraordinary impact’’ The Tribune
‘’ Tom Hickey…has an edgy brilliance…with real dramatic punch’’ Irish Times
