'Apocalypse Now'
at 8.00pm

Director: Francis Ford Coppola.
Francis Ford Coppola’s Oscar winning epic is loosely based on Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.
Set in the Vietnam War the movie follows Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) who is sent upriver to Cambodia
to exterminate the renegade Green Beret Colonel Kurtz, played by Marlon Brando, in a role that, by his own
admission, was one of the darkest of his life. The film perfectly encapsulates the madness of Vietnam, in the
words of director Coppola, “We were in the jungle, there were too many of us, we had access to too much money,
too much equipment, and, little by little, we went insane!” A brilliant movie and one that has to be seen on the big screen.

Theatre
Playing Burton
Written by Mark Jenkins. Directed by Guy Masterson.
Performed by JOSH RICHARDS
Thursday, 8th October 2009 at 8.30pm

The great Welsh roaring boyo, one of the most powerful actors and personalities of the
Twentieth Century, Richard Burton appeared to waste his talent,
squander his millions, drink
himself to an early death. He was the most nominated actor never to win an Oscar.
From humble roots as the 12th child of a drunken Welsh miner, he rose to become the World's
first megastar. Rarely out of the papers for three decades and infamously married to Elizabeth Taylor,
the word 'paparazzi' was coined for them... But the real Burton, little Richie Jenkins, was known only to a few.
Presented in Burton's own words and those of the great writers he admired, Welshman Josh Richards
reincarnates both the actor and the myth in a moving, powerfully charming, deeply profound performance.
An emotional helter-skelter ride through the life of a flawed genius.
And have things changed? As we witness this passion fuelled genius crash to a vodka sodden wreck,
we ask how steep is the price we still demand our idols to pay?
Directed by Burton's great nephew, Guy Masterson, Mark Jenkins' play was first presented in Edinburgh
in '94 to huge acclaim. It returned equally successfully to Edinburgh in 1997 and 2007. And has since been produced elsewhere with three other actors taking the role. Josh Richards is the man who created it...
This is the original and... the best.
‘An unforgettable distillation of the essence of Richard Burton’s uniqueness. A shattering portrayal’ The Daily Mail
‘With a mountain shattering presence Josh Richards becomes RICHARD BURTON in an exceptionally powerful and darkly haunting performance. It is riveting and peerlessly acted’ The Scotsman

Samuel Beckett’s
'Happy Days'
Directed by Sergio Amigo
Thursday, 10th September 2009 at 8.30pm
Never since 1958, when Samuel Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot' was staged for the first time in
Argentina, a local cast has performed a version of 'Happy Days' in its original English version.
The director has presented the characters by endowing them with all the nuances and subleties as implied
in the text. The total atmosphere of the production effectively depicts all its facets, transitions and tensions
by making visible the aesthetical multiplicity of Beckett's theatre.
"..an excellent production that regales the audience with an unforgettable aesthetic and intellectual experience."

The Kiss
By Michael Harding
Performed by Tom Hickey
Monday, 20th July 2009 at 8.30pm
The Kiss is a timely revival of one of Michael Harding’s most incisive comments on the state of Catholism in Ireland. Featuring Tom Hickey it promises to be a riveting experience in the theatre.
The Kiss is a tragic tale of one man’s compulsion, blindness and loneliness.
After the heat of the courtroom, a priest sits in silence to reflect on his deeds and to taste a
bitter remorse. But he is still ambiguous about his past. Forgetful of all suffering but for his own loneliness,
which still blinds him to the consequences, as he turns inward, turns to home – towards mother and
towards the last remembrance of a kiss more treacherous than that of Judas Iscariot. In vivid images and
heartbreaking clarity, this old priest tells the truth as he sees it, and his ambiguous mind is revealed for what it is.

‘’a performance of raw power and extraordinary impact’’ The Tribune
‘’ Tom Hickey…has an edgy brilliance…with real dramatic punch’’ Irish Times

Ailie Robertson
Monday, 6th July 2009 at 8.30pm

One of Scotland’s leading young harpists, Ailie Robertson fronts a contemporary, dynamic trio of harp, guitar, and percussion. A Live-Ireland Winner and BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2008 finalist, Ailie plays with outstanding vigour, poise and sensitivity. Jigs, reels and polkas get the feet tapping while her slow airs have been described as ‘heart-achingly beautiful’. Ailie Robertson’s eloquent, deeply expressive harp playing, combined with the guitarist’s masterful control of harmony and rhythm, and the percussionist’s canny blend of sensitivity and effervescence create a three-way musical conversation that ranges from soulful reflection to exciting, high octane dance tunes.
“This is an incredible debut solo from Ailie Robertson.….I really struggled to find enough words to put across my praise for this magnificent debut. It's moving, beautiful and totally original. It is a masterful album that combines Irish and Scottish influence as well as an undeniably clever contemporary twist. Ailie shows that the Celtic harp can be just as at home with guitar, bass, percussion and piano as it can be as a solo instrument. This album will take you to places you have never been before, quite simply it is mind-blowing”.

Photographic & Video Exhibition
Celebrating Two Kerry Sports Heroes
Legendary Kerry cyclist Mick Murphy
& local mountaineer John Dowd
Official opening by ex footballer and radio broadcaster Weeshie Fogarty
Thursday, 2nd July 2009 at 7.00pm

Legendary Kerry cyclist Mick Murphy is being honoured in Tech Amergin, Waterville, by an exhibition of photographic and video work by Cork artist Chris Hurley. In the 1950s and ‘60s the Rás Tailteann attracted bigger crowds than any other sporting event in Ireland. To compete was a great achievement, to finish it a greater one, to win it a monumental one. Occasionally a win became the stuff of legend.
The exhibition takes us back to that time with a film which retells the story by the hero himself, while
intimately portraying him through a series of stunning photographs. The exhibition will run until July 14th.

Equally monumental in its scale and achievement was the success of local mountaineer John Dowd,
who in 2008 became the first ever Kerryman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Echoing the teak-tough
nature of Murphys cycling style, John Dowds feat of endurance and both physical and mental courage marks
him out as one of Kerry’s great unsung sporting heroes. Following the exhibition opening John will give an
illustrated talk on his experience, with a slide show of photographs he took himself on his grueling climb.

The Truman Capote Talk Show
With Bob Kingdom as Truman Capote
Sunday 8th March 2009 at 8.00pm

Bitchy, Glitzy, Chic, Unique, Heartbreaking….
No one looked, or sounded, like Truman Capote. A five foot four terror, with a high-pitched, Southern drawl,
he wrote as he spoke, like a surgeon with a scalpel; made by words, destroyed by words, drugs and
alcohol. Capote, recreated, lays bare both sides of this classic American tragedy.
Winner of the Fringe First Award The Truman Capote Talk Show has enjoyed sell-out seasons at the
Lyric Hammersmith London and Off-Broadway.
"Bob Kingdom's beautifully gauged and eloquent performance underlines the nature of Capote's dilemma".
Nicholas deJongh, Evening Standard, London
"By recreating the style, elegance and poetic tragedy of Truman Capote, Mr.Kingdom, in one of the crowning achievements of the acting profession, has created new poetry of his own"

Endgame was Beckett's favourite play in that it was the one he
disliked least. It has never achieved
the same popularity as Waiting For Godot but it has as much poignancy, great speechs and poetic
intensity. The Godot Company forthcoming Production intend to bring out the humanity, humour
and the power of this extraordinary work.

Woolf is described as "a living icon of the theatrical avant-garde, an actor who throughout the 1960s
would appear in any play that broke new boundaries".
His film credits include Marat/Sade (1967), The Lion in Winter (1968), Steptoe and Son (1972),
Steptoe and Son Ride Again (1973), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Gorky Park (1983), Superman III (1983).

Celebrated one-woman show
'Corsetless'
Written & performed by Catherine Eaton
from text by William Shakespeare
Sunday 30th November 2008 at 8.30pm

CORSETLESS is an innovative one-woman
“tour de force” which follows Liv, a brilliant and troubled woman fighting for her
freedom in a mental institution. After years of silent withdrawal, Olivia
chooses to communicate with the world using only the words of Shakespeare.
For this "crime," she is placed in isolation in a psychiatric hospital and is observed by a team of medical
specialists twenty-four hours a day, among them the Doctor she trusted as a child.
Stripped of her privacy and her freedom, she savagely defends her sanity against the those
holding her, and the battleground she chooses is the torn text from the plays and poems
of a genius whose exquisitely turned phrases have indelibly shaped our language.
The solo show played to a sold-out audience at New York City's famed Carnegie Hall this past September,
and features an entirely original score by award-winning concert pianist Elaine Kwon.
“Eaton’s show is a most rare vision indeed, full of raw passion,
longing, tragic humor and unfiltered humanity.” Buffalo News

Chaplin could pull off, he eventually succeeds, even though his efforts land him in jail. While he is

Theatre
'On Raglan Road'
in association with Croft Productions
Written by Tom O'Brien
& based on the life of Patrick Kavanagh
Sunday 26th October 2008 at 8.30pm

On Raglan Road, explores Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh’s obsession with his muse and
inspiration, Hilda Moriarty. The play also details Kavanagh’s rivalry with another Irish writer of
the time, Brendan Behan who himself died in 1964.
Patrick Kavanagh was born in the village of Inniskeen, Co Monaghan, in 1904 and is now
regarded as Ireland’s most important poet after WB Yeats. The son of a shoemaker and small
farmer, he moved to Dublin in his mid thirties where he lived in poverty for most of his life, surviving
on handouts, the occasional bit of journalism, but mostly being supported by his younger brother, Peter.
On Raglan Road is a poem about his love affair with Hilda Moriarty, which was doomed from the start.
Always a controversial figure, he was hated as much as loved in Dublin, and his long-running
feud with Brendan Behan is well-chronicled.
Written by Waterford playwright Tom O’Brien, the play is full of pathos and is mixed with poetry and song.
The play is directed by John Dunne who has taken the essence of Kavanagh and placed him slap bang on stage.
Tickets: €15 (conc. €10). Bookings on 066 9478956

Lunchtime Theatre
Call Back Theatre

'Bonfire Night & Arsehammers'
Written by Claire Dowie
Performed by Cora Fenton
Directed by John Sheehy
Thursday 23rd October 2008 at 1.15pm

Claire Dowie is the inventor of Stand Up Theatre where the actor is talking directly to and interacting
with the audience. This 45 minute show, written by Claire Dowie, directed by John Sheehy and performed
by Cora Fenton, comprises a pair of deeply darkly comic gems: Bonfire Night, in which a daughter
takes her sweet revenge and Arsehammers, where a grandchild is sure that her grandfather's
strange disappearances reveal supernatural powers. The delivery is natural and conversational. It's very
funny: the subjects are serious but there is a wicked sense of humour underlying everything.
Both Bonfire Night and Arsehammers have characters who are perfectly ordinary and yet completely extraordinary.
Story telling with a difference and funny too!

Elizabeth Rose performs her New York show,
"If You Want Me, You Can Have Me Right Now!"
in Tech Amergin Arts Centre
Sunday 3rd August, 2008 at 8.30pm

"If You Want Me, You Can Have Me Right Now!" chronicles the life of a performing songwriter,
the obstacles (often hilarious) to getting one’s voice heard and the ultimate triumph of
the spirit. With book, music and lyrics by Rose, it features18 original songs, covering
styles from opera to hip hop and everything in-between.
A June 2008 reading of the show at The Cherry Lane Theatre (NY’s first Off-Broadway theatre),
in Greenwich Village elicited raves such as: “Carole King on steroids” and “Yo, 'betty'...you are one multitalented mf".
A native New Yorker, Elizabeth’s most recent cd, “Sleep Naked” has received excellent reviews and
international airplay. Labeled “a wicked-smart contemporary singer/songwriter,” reviewers
note “Bonnie Raitt meets Cole Porter”. “Sleep Naked” features a backing band of New York
session musicians who have played with Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra,
Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney to name a few.
Loosely based on Rose’s life, the show at Tech Amergin follows the life of a girl raised in a competitive
musical family in New York City. She escapes with her young husband to the Midwest where she
drops out of law school to join a rock band, get arrested in a Vietnam demonstration, divorces, flees
to Woodstock, teaches hyper-active kids in a New York City high school and finally finds
her voice as she quits her last ‘straight’ job.
Tickets €15 (conc. €10). Percentage of proceeds will go towards Lesotho.

EBLANA TRIO
ACCLAIMED IRISH PIANIST VERONICA McSWINEY
IN CONCERT WITH VIOLINIST AISLING O’DEA
AND CELLIST JULIA GRAHAM
Friday 1st August, 2008 at 8.30pm

The EBLANA ENSEMBLE was formed in 2002 when Veronica McSwiney, one of Ireland’s most successful pianists, returned to live in her native Dublin. Until then, her main career was that of soloist. She performed worldwide for many years both as solo-recitalist and guest artist with many famous Symphony Orchestras, including our own N.S.O, London Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Halle Orchestra, St Petersburg Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, Boston Symphony to name but a few. There is a wealth of wonderful Chamber Music which she was very keen to perform, and she set about contacting musicians both from Ireland and abroad with whom she was keen to perform. The Ensemble can consist of as many musicians as the programme or repertoire to be performed requires. In this particular instance it is a TRIO and this is her particular favourite group.
AISLING O’DEA is also Veronica’s daughter. Her violin studies commenced in the UK . She was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy in London. She was awarded many prizes during her student days, and in 1994 she was the winner of the String Section in RTE’s “Young Musician of the Future”. After further studies in Berlin she became a much sought after violinist in Chamber groups in Germany, and eventually she accepted a position with the Frankfurt Symphony Orchestra. However her real love was always Chamber Music and in 2007 she was appointed to the famous Scottish Chamber Orchestra and now resides in Edinburgh. Aisling has performed as soloist with our National Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra’s in Germany on many occasions.
The cellist is JULIA GRAHAM. Julia is a very talented cellist who was appointed straight from her studies in the R.A.M. in London to the position of asst-principal cellist of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Aisling and Julia were friends and students together in London, and during their student days they played regularly in chamber groups. As such, they were awarded many prizes including the coveted Harold Craxton Prize in London. Julia, like Aisling, always favoured the Chamber repertoire, and decided to become a free-lance cellist rather than a member of a Symphony Orchestra. She plays with various groups throughout the UK in Recital and Radio recordings. These two musicians have a beautiful blend of sound, which is such a vital ingredient in the performance of Chamber Music. They think as one!

“Shores of Waterville”
by
Yvonne North Moorhouse
Official opening by Michael Healy-Rae
Friday, 18th July 2008 at 8.00pm
(The exhibition will run from the 14th July to the 5th August)

Yvonne North Moorhouse’s art practice crosses the boundaries between new and traditional
art forms using; digital photography and image manipulation, collage and mixed media.
Ideas are explored through various digital and paper media, creating work which is
atmospheric and contemplative, evoking a place or moment in time. Seashore, lakeside,
and riverbank in the Waterville area are represented in a horizontal format; rather like a
narrow window through which one can view distant and remembered landscapes. The
theme of the work is the manifold nuances of water: light and shade, depths and shallows, ripples and reflections.

Concert
Luka Bloom
Wednesday, 16th July 2008 at 8.30pm
Having tread the boards of stages all over the globe, 36 years of craft honing has given Luka Bloom
from Newbridge a place on the music map. Like many Irish families then and indeed today Luka
comes from a family of singers and writers first going on tour with older brother, Christy Moore, in
1969. It was a tour of English folk clubs and he was fourteen years of age. That was a long time
ago. Turning 50 in 2005, Luka has brought his songs to clubs, theatres, fesitivals, bars, arenas
and dives all over the world. From McGanns in Boston to The Tivoli in Brisbane to Red Hot Club in Newbridge.
Bloom released his album Innocence in 2005. Many of the songs feature a new found interest in Eastern
European gypsy music and other World music. In his previous work, he relied on steel-stringed guitars that
created his distinctive style. His aubergine and yellow guitars were often introduced by name at gigs. The
album features a more classical guitar and the resonant plucking associated with that style of instrument.
In 2007 he released Tribe, a collaboration with County Clare musician Simon O Reilly, with O Reilly
composing the music and sending the recordings to Luka for him to complete with lyrics and singing.
A DVD entitled "The Man is Alive" was released on February 20, 2008. It features concerts filmed in Dublin
and at his home in Kildare, a question and answer session with fans, the documentary "My Name is
Luka", and a CD of music culled from the two performances.

Trad Concert
Kevin Burke with Cal Scott
Friday, 11th July 2008 at 8.30pm

Kevin Burke and his highly fluid and ornamented Sligo-style of fiddle is easily one of the most recognizable
talents in Irish music today. From his early days with the ground-breaking and now legendary Bothy Band
in the mid-70s to his tours with the Irish supergroup Patrick Street and the Celtic Fiddle Festival, Kevin Burke is
widely respected as both an ensemble player and a dynamic solo performer.
Multi-instrumentalist Cal Scott has been playing a variety of music for years, everything from folk to
jazz, on bass, brass and guitar, to name a few. He has honed that musicianship into a career as a
composer, arranger and producer. With extensive film and television scores to his credit as well as
his own CDs, Cal brings a seasoned and complementary aesthetic to his accompaniment with
Burke. He frequently sings his own songs when performing a show with Burke.
This is a duo of incredible musical depth. "

Keane’s ‘The Spraying of John O’Dorey’ the main character finds himself in court for crimes against future generations in a play which takes a swipe at the law, the enthusiastic environmentalist do-gooder and the nanny state. We fear for him as the evidence piles up against him. Keane, writing in 1972, suggests presciently that we should fear for ourselves too.
The piece ‘Whose Face Do You See’ is an adaptation of a short story by Melvin Burgess (adapted for stage by Jana Poller, a member of the group). While there’s life, there’s hope – but hope can be cruel. We share in the mother’s struggle to persist or resign and we empathise with the anguish and power of a mother’s love to resurrect the face in the mirror.
‘Pilgrims’ Chorus’ is concerned with the fate of Faust in his quest for the true essence of life.
The cast members and crew are as diverse as the pieces being performed with participants from Ireland, Canada, Hungary, Germany, Holland and England
Tickets €10 (conc. €8).

IN CONCERT WITH
CZECH CELLIST CHRISTIAN BENDA
(A Music Network concert)
Thursday 13th March, 8.30pm
"Finghin Collins makes the piano sound like a good wine - a delicate and crisp body interspersed with aromatic zesty accents. Collins’ style involves sound, sound and sound...”
Evi Arujärv, Postimees, Estonia
This concert, one of a short series, will feature works by Brahms, Debussy and Franck, and is the result of a performance by Finghin Collins with the Prague Symphony Orchestra in November 2007 in Milan. The conductor of the orchestra, Christian Benda, was invited by Finghin to Ireland to perform a short series of piano/cello recitals to extend the new relationship and provide a vehicle for artistic exchange.
Since winning first prize at the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Vevey, Switzerland in 1999, Dublin-born pianist Finghin Collins has developed a flourishing international career that has taken him all around Europe and the USA, and as far as Hong Kong, where he made his début with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta in June 2006. In 2006 he also made his début at the Lincoln Centre in New York, and with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by
Leonard Slatkin in London.
Conductor, cellist and composer Christian Benda is a descendant of the Czech Benda composers’ dynasty of the 18th century and a member of the longest family of musicians in music history. He received his professional training within his family where the musical tradition was maintained without interruption through three centuries.
Benda has performed extensively in Europe in music venues and festivals. He has also made numerous TV productions for television networks throughout the world. A passionate supporter of vocal repertoire, Christian Benda conducts vocalists such as Barbara Hendricks, Cheryl Studer, Simon Estes, and Renee Fleming. He has performed with Lazar Berman, Paul Badura-Skoda, Michel Béroff, Till Fellner, François-René Duchâble, Michaïl Rudy, Cristina Ortiz, Josef Suk, Vladimir Spivakov with whom he performed on the cello Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante, Pierre Amoyal, Bruno Giuranna, Paul Tortelier, Boris Pergamenschikow and the actress Andrea Jonasson.

“Oh, Whistle…”
Two ghost stories by M R James
performed by R M Lloyd Parry
Sunday 2nd March, 8.30pm

Over a century after they were first published, the ghost stories of M R James retain their power to terrify and amuse. Following his critically acclaimed one-man show A Pleasing Terror… Robert Lloyd Parry brings two more of James’ classic spine-chillers back to life.
Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad – a tale of nocturnal horror on the Suffolk coast – is considered by many to be author’s masterpiece. It is beautifully complemented here by The Ash Tree, a story of witchcraft and vengeance
down the generations.
Lloyd Parry is always absorbing, and catches the sense of dread that gives James his originality
The Times
A pleasing reminder that the spoken word can be as chilling as anything in the cinema
The Daily Mail
Remarkable. Lloyd Parry is a natural storyteller…

Theatre

'Orange Flower Water'
by Craig Wright
Sunday, 9th December at 8.30pm.
Such is the interest in this compelling and challenging must-see show that managements from Ireland and the U.K. will be visiting the production on its visit to the Kingdom with a view to booking it onto the international circuit.
Don’t be misled by the healthy ‘feel good’ sounding title – this amazing play by the Pulitzer Prize nominated Los Angeles-based writer and producer of “Lost”, “Six Feet Under”, “Brothers and Sisters” & “Dirty Sexy Money”, Craig Wright, packs punch after punch of devastating and hilarious confrontations between the four characters trying to make sense of the nightmare they have created in their lives.
Brad and Beth, Cathy and David are two happily married couples with young families – but then the demons of extra-marital sexual attraction begin to wreak havoc – who or what survives has spell-bound audiences wherever this dazzling production by Riff Raff Theatre has appeared.
The cast are four of the busiest actors in the business. The last twelve months they have been working non-stop on feature films, t.v. series and stage plays and with film festivals and premieres coming up over the next few months it is only a matter of time before one or all of them become household names.
Laura Way’s electrifying role as Emer Ryan in “The Clinic” is to be followed shortly with a major new RTE series “Fit”. Amy Hastings has featured recently in “The Tudors” and is currently shooting a new feature film in Galway.
Steve Gunn appears regularly on television but his recent work on “Anton” and “Hand-held” marks him out as a young Dublin actor with great screen presence and a great future. Both films are due for release in the new year.
Tim Dillard is an American actor based on this side of the Atlantic. He brings to every performance an intelligence and physicality which has him in constant demand – in the last twelve months alone he has completed or is due to shoot Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto”, “Speed-Dating”, “City of Embers” (with Bill Murray and rising star Saoirse Ronan) and “Body of Lies”, directed by Ridley Scott with Leonardo di Caprio and Russell Crowe.
Directed by Michael Way.

Twinning the Kingdoms - Kerry and Lesotho

As part of the United Nations Millenium Development Goals, the Kingdoms of Kerry and Lesotho are involved in a twinning project to aid development and exchange culture. ‘The Waterville Friends of Lesotho’ group was set up in February 2007, following the visit of HE Mannete Ramaili , Lesotho Ambassador to the Tech for the opening of a Photographic Exhibition by Eileen O’Leary. A group of interested people got together to form a support group to forge links with a village in Lesotho and to work directly with the village committee. We will work with Eileen O’Leary who regularly visits Lesotho, to ensure that all money raised is spent directly on the priorities of the village people. Whether the money is used for education, health, the care of Aids orphans or the production of food, it will be well spent. By the end of March 2007 we will have formed links with the village and know exactly where the money will be spent.

| |
The first of our fund-raisers will be a sponsored walk on 16 th March from the Tech to St. Fionnán’s Well in Caherbearna at 1.30 pm, this will coincide with the feast of St. Fionnán and hopefully will help revive the pattern tradition of making rounds at the holy well. |
