Spring 2013

Planning for the Vegetable Garden Saturday 16th February 1.00 – 4.00pm
What do you really want to eat? The freshest and tastiest salad and vegetable plants are those you pick yourself just by your back door! Choose what to grow in your vegetable garden this year or create a new vegetable garden. Do you need a Polytunnel or can you grow all you require outside and on your window sill? Rotation of crops will be considered and how to choose the right site for each plant. Sowing dates for this part of Ireland will be shared and propagation conditions for growing indoors and out. We will look at companion planting, which plants support each other and grow well together. Irish seed suppliers and varieties will be promoted giving you the best possibilities of a great growing season this year. Fee: €20 (1 day). Sue Jackson

Glass Mosaic Saturday 16th & 23rd February, 10.00am – 3.00pm

Playwriting with Mick Mulcahy Friday 22nd & Saturday 23rd February, 10.00am – 4.00pm
This course is aimed at people who have a love of theatre/story/film and who would like to free their creative side. Suitable for people who want to begin writing the story they have always wanted to tell in dramatic form for the stage mainly, but screen can also be explored. We will read from classic and contemporary plays, and course members will be encouraged to bring in written work. Mick is an actor who has performed in various roles in Siamsa Tire, Everyman Theatre, Garter Lane Theatre, The Abbey Theatre and The Gaiety Theatre and is also experienced in delivering drama workshops, he recently delivered a workshop based around ‘Beyond the Brooklyn Sky’ (Mick’s debut production, directed by Peter Sheridan). In this three day workshop you will learn the basics of guitar in one go. Workshop is also suitable for people interested in improving their guitar playing. Learn seven basic guitar chords, basic rhythms for accompaniment, basic fingerpicking technique and a sound posture. Introduction to the very useful chord schemes and tablature for self study will also be covered in the workshop. You will also learn the three most common ways to tune your guitar. Fruit and Nuts in your Garden Saturday 2nd March 1.00 – 4.00pm
Have you considered growing hazelnuts in your garden? The Celts prized them so much the penalty was death if you cut one down. This workshop will look at conditions for growing nuts and many varieties of fruit. How much shelter or shade is needed for your preferred fruits and nuts will be covered and whether to grow them in raised beds or ridges? Soil conditions and feeding for the best and tastiest produce will be considered. Practical Presentation Skills Saturday 9th March, 9.30am – 4.30pm This course is designed as a follow-on training for those who participated in the ‘Essential Presentation Skills’ course in November 2012. It will also allow new participants time to practice and polish their presentation style. The focus is on how presentations are structured and delivered, with lots of helpful tips and techniques to deliver powerful and persuasive messages. Group and individual exercises to prepare for diverse audiences as well as “before” and ”after” video recordings of all participants. It’s a day to overcome ill-founded fears of public speaking or to improve on what may already be good presentations. Fee: €15 TBC (1 day). Mary Beary

Lightroom 4 for Digital Photographers (An Introduction) Saturday 9th March, 10.00 – 4.00pm
With Photoshop ® Lightroom Adobe has created one of the most comprehensive tools for digital photography. From importing images, keywording and editing to final output for print, slide shows, books, geotagging, own website or Internet portal and social media, the entire digital workflow is covered by this software. In the current version 4, Lightroom has one of the best RAW converters on the market and delivers in all areas of detailed colour accuracy up to the impressive noise reduction results. This software can help the amateur to professional photographer work with the ever increasing flood of images of the digital photo age from time saving tasks to improving the quality of your photos. This workshop is therefore suitable for beginners in a digital photography and Lightroom as well as advanced photographers. Principles & Practice of Music Recording Saturday 24th November, 10am – 5pm
This workshop will explain the fundamental aspects of sound recording and allow the students to see how a recording can be made from beginning to end. On finishing the workshop students should have an understanding of how the recording process works and the knowledge to make their own recordings using their computer as their main operating tool. We will explore how the computer has come to dominate the process at every stage and how we might use this to our advantage. The course will be over one day, split into three sessions of approximately two hours each covering recording principles, in the first session, recording practice as a practical demonstration in the second session and finishing the recording through mixing and mastering in the final session. When students have been studying painting for a while they usually realise the importance of drawing skills & wish they had learnt them better from the beginning. ‘WATER, STONE, LIGHT’ – OUTDOOR PHOTO WORKSHOP
Saturday 28th July, 12noon – 8pm
Photography workshop at Loher beach Waterville.
Challenge your creativity and get expert advice in a small group setting to achieve
a new artistic level. Loher Beach is a wonderful location with sheer cliffs, rocks
that have been shaped by the sea and the ever moving water.
Shapes, reflections, light and time are the main subjects of this workshop to bring your
photography to the next level. With demonstration, experiments and feedback you will
grow your existing skills and talents revealing new ways of seeing. Meet in Tech Amergin

‘Seaweed Vegetable Workshop’ foreshore walk & cooking Demonstration 
Saturday 21st April 2012, 10.30am – 3.00pm
Learn how to identify, harvest and prepare many of the common seaweeds found on our shores.
A display of various sea plants with an explanation of where on the shoreline to find them
will be followed by a foreshore walk & talk at Ballinskelligs. On returning to Tech
Amergin there will be a tasting of various foodstuffs made with sea plants – soup, bread,
cheese pickles etc. A demonstration will follow with basic tips on storing, preparing and
cooking with sea vegetables and some basic foodstuffs will be prepared.

You will be shown how to use jumpers, t-shirts, scarves etc (that you might be about
to throw away)and turn them into new wearable fashions. Bring along some old sweaters,
t-shirts, cardigans etc.and also if you have any buttons, bits of lace, old jewellery
or other bits and pieces of fabric…also needles and threads, embroidery threads
etc …… and create something new and fabulous to wear. This will be a fun class
where you can let your imagination run wild and let your creative side shine through
the dark days of winter.
